School History

In 1999, St. Michael parish closed its parish school after the twin pressures of declining enrollment and increasing costs made it too difficult to maintain the grade school.

The pastor of St. Michael parish, Fr. Herb Sperger, had recently learned of the San Miguel Model of schools and believed that such a progressive learning environment would thrive in his parish.   Fr. Herb contacted the Christian Brothers and in turn, they contacted the Sisters of St. Joseph.  The Christian Brothers and Sisters of St. Joseph are guided by missions and strive to educate the poorer classes.   Leaders and representatives met with Fr. Herb and agreed to study the feasiblility of creating a school at 2nd and Jefferson.   After some discussions, Fr. Herb, the Christian Brothers and the Sisters of St. Joseph decided to move forward with the twist of heavily involving a lay Board of Trustees to help fund and guide the school.   In the spirit of St. John Baptiste de La Salle and the San Miguel model the new school was named La Salle Academy.

La Salle Academy opened its doors in September 2003 to address the needs of underprivileged children.  La Salle Academy is an independent school owned by the Board of Trustees established in the traditions of the Christian Brothers and the Sisters of Saint Joseph.  We strive to educate children in grades 3 through 8 who face significant financial, social, and academic challenges and whose families believe that quality education is the key to change their futures.  La Salle Academy combats the obstacles our students face with a rigorous academic program grounded in faith and coupled with the social and academic supports and services necessary to ensure growth.
